Family Information Service|Wandsworth Community Feeding Service (1)

This service is for children and young people from 0 to 11 years who have difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing, or have significantly restricted diets/feeding aversions. There are two pathways within the Wandsworth CommunityFeeding Service. Some children might be on both pathways depending on their needs. See below for more information on these pathways.

Pathway 1 - Community Dysphagia Team: for children who have difficulty eating, drinking, or swallowing.

There may be concerns about the safety of these children when they eat or drink, the development of their motor skills related to feeding, or their ability to eat enough food to grow.

This service offers access for children between 0-11 years to a Speech and Language Therapist who will assess the child’s eating and drinking skills, make recommendations to help with the child’s eating and drinking skills, and support the family and other carers to understand and put these in place. The Speech and Language Therapist will also communicate with relevant team members in order to better support the child. Depending on the child’s needs the team offers support across various sites, including tohomes, schools and nurseries. Children must be under the care of a GP in the Borough of Wandsworth.

Pathway 2 – Multidisciplinary Feeding Team: for children who have significantly restricted diets and feeding aversions

This pathway is for children and young people from 0 to 11 years who are highly selective about food and may have little interest in eating, or only accept a small amount of their preferred food.

This pathway is not appropriate for children and young people where their avoidant and restricted food intake is in the context of weight and/or shape concerns. The team supports children and young people who have a GP in the Borough of Wandsworth and are not attending specialist educational provision.

The service offers a multidisciplinary approach and access to:

  • Clinical Psychology – Support to develop understanding in the area of behavioural patterns and/or emotional aspects related to feeding and eating difficulties
  • Dietetics – Assessment and help for age-appropriate growth and nutritional intake
  • Occupational Therapy – Considering sensory or other needs affecting food acceptance or mealtimes, as well as the equipment used at mealtimes

Parents are invited to attend the virtual parent workshop as initial access to the service. Following the attendance of the workshop, parent or children’s group sessions and/or clinic sessions will be offered, depending on the needs of the child.
